Mayan CosmoVision

In these challenging times, when it is so easy to fall into imbalance and lose our equilibrium and our way, ancient teachings like these can be a source of nurturance and support.

Drawing from the Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation story, Julio will explain some of the key aspects of the Mayan spiritual system, such as the following:

We are each part of a vast, interconnected web of energy.

At the core of the Mayan spiritual system are 20 living energies, called nawales (pronounced nah wall’ ays). The ancients believed that these energies guide humanity through time, and so they are the basis of their Tzolk’in calendar. These energies not only shape our reality but are also within us, as we are part of the whole.

The goal in the Mayan system is to help everyone create greater balance in their lives. We all fall out of balance, so this is not about perfection. It’s about recognizing when we are out of balance and learning to re-balance quickly. This is how we become resilient.

This web is a living entity, and we can turn to it for help and guidance. If we ask with gratitude and open our hearts, it will respond.

After this introduction, Julio will offer opportunities to go deeper and learn more about both the cosmovision and ourselves.

Mayan Birth Chart Readings

The day we are born on has a particular energy that is our nawal. This is our Heart Sign, our archetypal imprint or spiritual identity. It is an inward power. It lies beneath the surface, deep in our heart. It is the spiritual essence that underlies our personality.

Besides our Heart Sign, we are born into a constellation of seven other energies. They are known as our Mayan Cross; a map of the energies that guide your life.

Knowing our birth chart helps us understand ourselves, who we are on an energetic level. It helps us understand the karma that shaped us from birth. It teaches us about our gifts and strengths, our weaknesses, vulnerabilities and struggles. This knowledge helps us develop our relationship with ourselves as well as with others.

Mayan spiritual guides believe that it is our responsibility to study our nawal because it is the key to our true “job” in life, the gifts we bring into the world and the destiny we must fulfill.

Mayan Birth Reading: You will receive an illustrated Birth Chart showing your Mayan Cross, the energies that make you you. Julio will then explain your chart in a recorded zoom session.

Mayan Seed Readings

Do you have a question or concern for which you would like some guidance?

A seed reading is an ancient system of divination. It used to communicate with the 20 living energies, and to petition them for wisdom, information and direction.

Seed readings can help us obtain clarity and insight about a problem, situation or issue. In the case of a conflict or illness, for example, it can help us give us insight into the true nature of the illness—where its roots really lie—and how to work on the spiritual levels to heal.

Using the seeds of the tz’ite tree, which is sacred to the Maya, Julio will offer prayers on your behalf before casting the seeds. Like a Rohrshacht, the seeds paint a picture which Julio will then interpret. When the answer comes, it is bursting with insight. You will feel more connected to the Universe.

Seed Readings are also offered over Zoom.

About Julio Tot

From an early age, Julio felt a strong connection to the traditions of his Mayan heritage. He was raised near Flores in the Petén region of Guatemala where there are many ancient sacred sites, including Tikal. As a young man, he became a tour guide and has been sharing his knowledge of his homeland and its history with visitors in the region for close to 30 years.

As Julio’s path evolved, he was drawn to becoming a spiritual guide in the Mayan tradition. The term for spiritual guide is aj’qij’ (ah keek’) in the Mayan K'iche' language.

In his role as spiritual guide, Julio is a natural teacher and ceremonial leader who is deeply committed to sharing the wisdom of the Mayan tradition to help fellow humans.

He has a deep connection to the Mayan Cosmovision, particularly the nawales. Each of us are born with a particular guiding nawal, and Julio’s is 8 Kawoq, a powerful healing energy. Julio is a practitioner of traditional sacred fire ceremonies, which open portals of energy for healing, restoring balance and wisdom to help guide people on their spiritual journeys.

Julio is known for his ability to sense energy and receive visions that come through dreams, the fire, or signs in Nature.

Julio’s father also had this gift. When archeologists from the University of Pennsylvania first began excavating Tikal in the 1960’s, looking for the tombs of Mayan kings, Julio’s father worked at the dig. After three years without success, they considered pulling the plug on the project. In desperation, they turned to one of the Mayans. “What do you think?” they asked Julio’s father. But Julio’s father was not “thinking.” He was clearing his mind so that another kind of knowing might enter. After a few moments of silence, he told the archeologists where to dig, and tombs were found. There was, of course, little official acknowledgement.

While Julio is dedicated to preserving the Mayan cosmology for the world, he also seeks to help his own community re-connect with their spiritual roots. These were severed as a consequence of historical trauma, beginning with the coming of the conquistadors and then the 36-year-long civil war in Guatemala. Many were slaughtered; others fled to survive, decimating the Mayan population. For years after, the Catholic Church forbade the practicing of traditional rituals. Over time, the Mayan population of the region has grown, but most have lost their precious ancestral connection. Julio works to help his community recover their traditions and their pride.

Languages: Julio is trilingual – Spanish, English, and Mayan (a rare combination)
